In 1960 Morgan/Lawrence/Limestone
Association for Retarded Children
(MLLARC) held their first meeting. They
held their meetings and conducted their
first services in the basement of a
church in Decatur, Alabama.
In 1976 Cullman ARC joined MLLARC and
the name was changed to Center for the
Developmentally Disabled, North Central
Alabama Inc.
CDD NCA, Inc was incorporated as a 310
Board on January 10, 1977. There were
four facilities at that time. The
Margaret Jean Jones Center in Cullman;
Bill Stewart Center in Moulton; Margaret
Jean Jones Center in Athens and Decatur
Workshop in Decatur. The first location
for Central Office and Decatur Workshop
after incorporating was at 705 Cherry
Street N.W., Decatur, Alabama 35601.
In 1992 The Centers for the
Developmentally Disabled, North Central
Alabama, Inc. was incorporated as a
non-profit Corporation Act, Chapter 10,
Title 10, 1958 Code of Alabama.
The
Centers for the Developmentally
Disabled, North Central Alabama, Inc. (CDD
NCA, Inc.) grew from a divestiture by
the Center for the Developmentally
Disabled, North Central Alabama, Inc., a
public non-profit corporation operating
under the Alabama Act 310 as the local
Mental Retardation Authority serving
Morgan, Limestone, and Lawrence
Counties. The parent organization's
Board of Directors voted on 10/08/92 to
separate the service provider operations
from the role of planning and
sanctioning. The 310 Board then adopted
a new name, The North Central Alabama
Mental Retardation Authority and
continued its planning and sanctioning
role of services for persons with mental
retardation and their
families.
The Centers for the Developmentally
Disabled, North Central Alabama, Inc.
with a slight name change, assumed
operation of the programs on January 1,
1993.
Today CDD NCA, Inc. serves individuals
with mental challenges/developmental
delays in Morgan, Lawrence, Limestone,
and Madison Counties. Services include
three (3) day programs/workshops, early
childhood program, supported employment,
and 17 residential group homes..
